The GTCC WBB Team closed out their 1st semester of the 2011 - 2012 season by winning the Prince George's Community College Holiday Tournament in Washington, DC.  In the 1st round the Titans battled with the #13 Illinois Valley CC.  Illinois Valley, which has been in the National Tournament the last 3 years and came away with a tough 55 - 49 win.  IVCC got off to a quick start jumping out to a quick 8 - 2 lead.  After a timeout the Titans ratcheted up their defense and held the high scoring Eagles to only 19 1st half points.  Freshman Dana Gildea hit two 3 point baskets and had 8 - 1st half points and fellow freshman and Ragsdale Graduate Courtney Marsh came off the bench to score 6 points in the half.  In the 2nd half  the game see sawed back and forth.  Illinois Valley took a 46 - 44 lead with 2:44 to go.  Senior Jhaznyn Whitley hit a pull up jumper to knot the score at 46.  Following an IVCC turnover Senior Asia Wheeler scored on a nice up and under move to give the Titans the lead for good.  Following an Eagle free throw Wheeler once again scored in the post and after a defensive stop by the Titans Wheeler provided some cushion hitting a huge 3 point shot from the right corner giving the Titans a 6 point lead.  On the day, Wheeler led way with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Courtney Marsh had a double double off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Freshman Dana Gildea finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds and Freshman point guard Jodeci Saunders played a great floor game with 10 assists and 4 steals.

In the PGCC Championship Game the Titans took on the host Prince George's Community College Owls.  In a tightly contested game the Titans came away with the Title and a 51 - 45 victory.  Early on neither team could seem to get in rhythm.  The game never saw a lead more than 4 in the 1st half.  Freshman point guard Jodeci Saunders had 5 points and 3 assists in the 1st half and fellow Freshman Dana Gildea had 8 in the half.  In a tight 2nd hald which saw 7 lead changes the Titans finally took the lead with 1:31 to go on a Shaunese Crawford end to end driving lay up which put the Titans up 42 - 41.  Three consecutive Titan defensive stands ended the same exact way on the offensive end, with Asia Wheeler buckets.  Following a PGCC 3 point basket, Wheeler was up to her old tricks with a conventional 3 point play to close out the scoring for the Titans.

Wheeler was huge in the 2nd half when she scored 18 of her game high 21 points.  But, she didn't stop there, finishing with 15 rebounds and she blocked 5 shots.  Dana Gildea finished with 12 points and 4 assists.  Senior center Taryn Spicer had a quiet offensive game with 4 points but was dominate on the defensive end.  She finished with 12 rebounds and held PGCC's leading scorer 10 points under her average.  With the win the Titans close out the extremely difficult semester with a record of 12 wins and 3 defeats.  The 3 defeats came at the hands of the defending National Champion, The defending Region X Division 1 Champion and the defending Region X Division 2 Champion.  The Titans played 13 of their 15 games on the road and faced 12 teams who were either Division 1 or a team that played in their National Tournament last year.  The 2nd semester should be a little more friendly to the Titans as they play 10 of their 15 games at the friendly confines of the Ragsdale YMCA.  The Titans now break for the Holidays.  The Titans open the 2nd semester on the road at Catawba Valley CC on January 11th, their 1st home game will be January 20th against conference foe Brunswick CC.
