Direct Care Worker

Do you enjoy helping others? A Direct Care Worker assists individuals of all ages who have disabilities or impairments and need assistance. There are many common job titles that fall under the direct care worker umbrella. Some of these are home health aides, habilitation technicians, mental health technicians, job coaches, life coaches, mentors, childcare workers, in home companions, respite workers, and personal care assistants. These individuals provide services that improve the quality of life for clients in their care.

Join this exciting growing area within the health professions by completing this training. 56 hours of the course will be spent in the classroom and 24 hours will be spent in a variety of non-paid internship settings in which Direct Care Workers are employed. Students will have the opportunity during internship settings to practice skills learned in the classroom and to network with potential employers.

Salary Range: $6.50-$10 per hour for entry level positions with potential to earn more with additional training and experience

This 80-hour training includes:

• Types of Guardianship and how this affects decision-making
• Person Centered Philosophy of Care
• Recognizing abuse and knowing how and when to report it
• Writing billable service documentation that meets Medicaid and/or Medicare standards
• An overview of the types of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities & Substance Abuse Services available in North Carolina
• Effective Communication Skills with Children and Adults
• Professional Ethics and Conduct
• An introduction to Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness
• Understanding Learned Helplessness, Codependency, & Counter-transference
• Team work and Community as models for wellness and care
