Do I need an appointment to take a test?

Appointments are not necessary for placement tests or instructor tests.
All other tests are administered by appointment or during certain blocks to time during the year.

What do I need to do to take the placement test?

You will need to file an application for admission and talk to an admissions representative who will give you a placement test card. Bring the card and a photo ID to the Assessment Center when you are ready to take your placement test.

Is there a charge for the placement test?

There is no charge if you are a GTCC student or are applying to attend GTCC.  There is a $5.00 charge if you will not be a GTCC student and need your scores sent to another institution.

How long does the placement test take?

The placement test is given on computer and is not timed.
Most people can complete the test in 2 hours although some people finish much sooner and some take much longer.

How may I prepare for the placement test?

There is a book titled Chart Your Success on the COMPASS that you may use to prepare for the test. It is available for purchase from the GTCC Bookstore; it may be checked out for 3 nights from the GTCC Learning Resource Center; and you may go to the Tutoring Center in the Health Careers Building to use it. GED, SAT, or ACT examination preparation materials are also helpful and are available at most libraries and commercial bookstores. FREE TEST PREP WEBSITES

I do not have a photo ID. May I still take my test?

You may not take a test without some form of photo identification. In addition to a driver's license, we will accept a work ID with photo, a passport, credit card with photo, a school ID with photo, school yearbook, church directory, or ID issued from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

May I bring my child with me to the Assessment Center?

No. Children also may not be left unattended anywhere on campus.

After my placement test, what do I do next?

You will talk with a counselor or an advisor about your test results and about registering for classes.

May I take the placement test more than once?

GTCC allows you to retest once on the placement test.
You will need to talk with a counselor to receive authorization to retest.

How long are placement test scores valid?

Three years.

How do I get college credit for what I already know?

There are 34 exams for which you may receive college credit by taking a CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exam. GTCC will only accept a 26 of the CLEP Exams for course credit. You may get a list of those courses in the Assessment Center. Learn more about CLEP exams.
