Placement Testing

GTCC uses the COMPASS Placement Test to accurately evaluate a student's academic skills in Mathematics, English (Writing), and Reading.  Placement testing is available on the Jamestown Campus on a walk-in basis, while testing on the Greensboro and High Point Campuses require an appointment.

Retesting Policy

GTCC requires that in order for you to retest on the Placement Test you must complete one of the following workshops for the section you wish to retest in, prior to taking the placement test for a second time.  Please select one of the following for more information or to complete your COMPASS Workshop.

Placement Testing Schedule (Jamestown)

• Monday - Thursday, 8:00am - 6:00pm (Closing at 7:00pm)
• Fridays, 8:00am - 2:30pm (Closing at 3:30pm)(see below for Summer Hours)

• Saturdays, 9:00am - 11:00am (Closing at 12:00pm)**

What you need to bring on the test day

• A photo ID
• Blue Testing Card provided by the Enrollment Services

• Any workshop certificates if you wish to retest on the COMPASS

Items the Assessment Center will provide

• Scratch paper
• Scientific calculator

• Pencil

More Information

For more information regarding placement testing at GTCC, please feel free to contact us via the information on the Contact Assessment page.  We also offer the COMPASS Placement Test for students applying to other institutions who wish to take it with us and have the results transferred.  The fee for this service is $5.00 which includes the test and transcript fee for the scores.  If you need testing accommodations on the basis of a disability, please let us know in advanced, or check with our disAbility Access Services.  Children are not allowed in the Assessment Center and must not be left unattended on campus while you test.

Summer Hours

Beginning the week of May 7 and ending July 27, 2012, the college will close on Fridays at 12:00pm (noon).  This means in order to start a test on Fridays during that time period you must be in the Assessment Center on the Jamestown Campus by 11:00am.  The Greensboro and High Point Campuses must be scheduled for an appointment.
