This course introduces the basic elements of Mandarin Chinese within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on oral communication, reading of simple texts and character writing practice. Pinyin (a phonetic transcription system) and simplified characters (a standard writing form employed in mainland China) will be introduced. Learn how to reupholster chairs, sofas, and other pieces of fine furniture. Learn how to sew cushions, skirts, and all covers for re-upholstery; how to re-tie and tie springs; how to brace the frame; and how to secure the webbing. Also included will be fabric layout and cutting, some techniques of refinishing the legs, and fabric patterns and styles. Bring to the first class: a pair of regular pliers and a tack puller (can be purchased at a hardware store) and a small project (footstool, dining room chair etc.) and fabric.
